Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations: "Ban the box!"

In light of this recent tragedy here in Charlotte, where an ex-con murdered his co-worker in a bungled robbery, this campaign in Philadelphia to prohibit ALL background checks can only be called a tragedy in the making:

New legislation in Philadelphia aimed at giving ex-convicts a chance to make a better first impression at job interviews was the topic of a legal seminar this morning in center city. Employers were learning how the law is being enforced by the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations.

The law firm of Zarwin Baum hosted the seminar for some of their clients, addressing a new regulation that has been dubbed “Ban the Box.”

Those regulations prohibit employers from inquiring about a job applicant’s criminal background on the initial application. “Banning the box” refers to the box that would ask, “Have you ever been convicted of a crime?”

I'm all for giving someone a second chance - that is, IF they demonstrate true repentance. But an employer can't even make that determination if he doesn't know all the facts. For the safety of innocent co-workers, employers must be able to uncover an applicant's history.

Stupid of course but there would be ways to work around it. Ask if the applicant would be able to travel out of state or would be able to acquire a firearm.

HaroldC,

Yes, but ex-cons are REALLY GOOD at lying to you.

Maybe the ex-cons should all apply at state jobs, then sue if they don't automatically get the jobs. Let those legislators wonder if "the new guy" in the office is one of those ex-cons!

Even if there is no backround check doesn't mean they won't commit a murder or any other crime. Also a back round check for a stupid regular doesn't mean the perpetrator never committed any crime , perhaps they ain't ever been caught. When the police do such checks or govt checks they have to have reasonable suspicion to do so. People now when renting apts or anything you allows others to your vital info. It's disgusting. More in the north would do such thing. There is no such thing as trust anymore in the north generally. Then there is always giving people a chance factor. The whole ID thing is against sovereignty and the natural law. However some ID is needed at times but the govt has totally enslaved the sheeps just about. Back way back when , people used to have gun racks on trucks and children knew the importance of owning and using firearms. Only the govt and criminals get the upper hand now .. We the people like the militias should regain control and have the right to defends one land, property and life. Checks should be kept to a limit.
